Old Ways Are Best

I recall one day, when I was still employed, we were on delivering duty with a van we travelled for about 200 Km and delivered our goods to their destination. At last we were going back home, deciding to use the shortcut route, which was a gravel road. We chose to do this because it was late and we wanted to reach home in time. While travelling on this road, we discovered that it was very rough, had potholes, corrugations and humps here and there. After travelling for about 30 Km at a very slow speed, we found out that there was no way we would reach home except by travelling overnight ­ so we decided to return back to the previous road we had used, because it was tarred and good to travel at our own discretion.

This reminds me of the words in the prophet Jeremiah 6:16 (NEV) where it says: "Thus says Yahweh, stand in the ways and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls...." Verse 19 says, "Hear Earth! Behold, I will bring evil on this people, even the fruit of their thoughts, because they have not listened to My words, and as for My law, they have rejected it."

Yes, these words were sent to the nation of Israel because time and again they disobeyed God's laws and went their own way, hence God was warning them about the evil He would bring. These words are still fresh today, even as they were in Jeremiah's lifetime: they, too, apply to this day's generation. We are disobeying God's words and we are rejecting His laws. We have forgotten our old ways, Brethren and Sisters.

God says He will bring evil to today's people ­ and we are witnessing some of this today. The world is in trouble, with wars, droughts, many different diseases, some of them incurable. It is high time to ask for our old ways, and start to walk in them, so that we will find our souls' rest in our Father's Kingdom. Let's reject our new ways (short cuts), which lead to destruction.
