A Staggering Truth

“Thou shalt also decree a thing, and it shall be established unto thee: and the light shall shine upon thy ways”  (Job 22:28).

It is a proven truth that there is great power in the spoken word, yet everyone is inclined to use words in a thoughtless manner.  If you rise in the morning muttering that it is going to be a terrible day, you will not be disappointed.  If you persist in telling yourself that business is bad – in fact it has never been worse – you close the pathway of prosperity that can help things to improve.  The words you use, strangely enough, influence the thoughts you think.  You cannot talk cheerfully and confidently for long and retain an oppressive state of mind, so if you are feeling depressed, talk positively and creatively with those you meet.

Such a discipline is not, contrary to popular belief, “putting on a big act”.  It is something much more constructive; it is decreeing something that you know to be true and bringing it into the arena of practical living.  If you feel you cannot accept this truth, what is the alternative?  You accept the principle that everything is going into a big decline, and there is little or nothing you can do about it, and while you are spreading this doleful information you are really decreeing that these things are sure to happen.

If God’s goodness and belief in His eternal purpose for mankind are part of your fundamental belief, you can do no other than decree His perfect will in your situation, and work for its fulfilment. I must never underestimate the power of the words I use on myself and others.
